Digestive Disease Associates:
Strengthening Independence Through Partnership with ECPC
When Digestive Disease Associates (DDA) set out to enhance patient care and streamline operations, their goal was simple: bring diagnostic precision closer to home. Partnering with Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC), the team built an in-office pathology lab that transformed turnaround times, elevated report quality, and reinforced their commitment to independent, patient-first medicine.
“Our mission is simple: take good care of our patients and do the right thing. When we focus on that, everything else tends to fall in place.” — Dr. Michael Dorfman, Managing Partner, Digestive Disease Associates.
Project Overview
Digestive Disease Associates is a physician-owned gastroenterology practice led by Dr. Michael Dorfman and Dr. Christopher Illick. For years, the practice operated under a hybrid pathology model, performing technical work in-house while relying on outside labs for professional reads. Although functional, this approach created increasing challenges, including turnaround times that stretched up to two weeks, inconsistent report quality, limited communication with external pathologists, and growing patient anxiety while waiting for results.
“Patients were anxious waiting for results. From our perspective, the turnaround time, sometimes up to two weeks, was the biggest drawback. Now with ECPC, we’re getting results in 48 hours,” says Dr. Dorfman. From a leadership standpoint, the need for change was becoming clear. “Our old model had a dwindling number of insurances that covered our pathology,” says Dr. Illick, Co-Managing Partner at Digestive Disease Associates.
Momentum shifted when Dorfman learned that another Gastroenterology group in Connecticut had successfully partnered with ECPC. Early conversations with ECPC leadership, including Dr. Dennis O’Neill and Rebecca DiIorio, quickly confirmed alignment.
“It was obvious early on that they had their act together. They operate very similarly to how we do, independent, responsive, and focused on quality. I remember telling my partner, ‘I think this is the answer.’” — Dr. Michael Dorfman
Illick shared that same confidence. “Clearly experienced. Clearly professional,” he says. “ECPC is an independent practice and therefore philosophically synchronized with us.”
ECPC connected DDA with Lighthouse Laboratory Services to manage consulting and compliance. Rebecca remained actively involved throughout the build-out, reviewing plans and ensuring the final lab met ECPC’s standards. “Rebecca stayed involved through the entire process, giving feedback and ensuring the end product would meet ECPC’s standards. It truly felt like a partnership,” says Dr. Dorfman.

Client Results
Within days of the lab going live, the impact was unmistakable. Turnaround times were reduced to just 48 hours, allowing clinicians to make timely, confident decisions. “The quality of the reports is better, even compared to Yale. We get histology images, which I love. It’s not just faster; it’s better.” — Dr. Michael Dorfman
Operational improvements were felt immediately. “We now have 99% of our pathology flowing through ECPC, with high-quality results, very efficient and very reliable turnaround times,” says Illick. “It has made everyone’s life easier.”
Beyond speed, direct access to ECPC’s pathology team became a defining strength. “Dr. O’Neill texted me directly after reviewing slides for a lymphoma surveillance patient to make sure I was aware of something he saw. That level of engagement and communication is incredible,” says Dr. Dorfman.
“I am very confident in the reports we get,” Illick notes. Physicians transitioned seamlessly once they experienced the consistency and diagnostic clarity. “Everyone’s very comfortable now saying, ‘Let’s send it to ECPC, they do a great job.’ That trust built fast,” says Dr. Dorfman.
“Financial stability increases our chance to remain independent,” Illick notes.
“I’m proud of our ongoing ability to adapt. Bringing pathology in-house allows us to maintain our autonomy and keep practicing medicine the way we want to, without pressure to partner with a hospital system or sell part of the practice,” says Dr. Dorfman.Looking back on the project, Dorfman notes: “My only regret is that we didn’t do this sooner.”
