Rebuilding Confidence in Pathology Through Partnership

When a multispecialty group like Prime Healthcare experiences inconsistencies in pathology reporting, the impact reaches far beyond the lab. For Prime’s gastroenterology team, maintaining accuracy and confidence in diagnostic results was essential to patient care.

Partnering with Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC) provided a clear path forward, combining clinical precision, operational support, and a trusted partnership built on shared values.

Project Overview

Prime Healthcare is a multispecialty medical group with a dedicated gastroenterology division. That structure, says Dr. Sohaib Jamil, made their situation distinct:

“We’re a gastroenterology practice within a larger multispecialty group. The fact that we were able to work out the details of being part of a larger system rather than a standalone GI group is what makes us different from anything ECPC had done before.”

The group’s endoscopy center had long relied on pathology services from a local hospital. Over time, however, the reliability and quality of those reports began to erode, especially in the years following the pandemic.

“The quality of the reads really started to go downhill after COVID,” Dr. Jamil recalls. “We saw high turnover, even among the pathologists. We just didn’t have a lot of reliability or faith in the pathology we were receiving back.”

Those concerns became the driving force behind their decision to find a new partner, one who could bring consistency, accuracy, and confidence back to their pathology workflow. Prime first learned about ECPC through another gastroenterology group that had shared a positive experience. The ECPC team’s reputation and collaborative spirit quickly stood out.

“We had a great initial meeting with Dennis and several of the pathologists,” Dr. Jamil says. “It really instilled confidence that we shared similar ideals, providing excellent care for our patients and adapting to the post pandemic challenges of healthcare.”

From their first meeting, Prime could tell ECPC wasn’t new to these challenges. Dr. Thomas J. Corredine, another gastroenterologist at Prime, described that early impression clearly:

“It was our first rodeo, but definitely not theirs. They had so much experience setting up labs like this. From our first meeting until now, it’s been great.”

Before establishing their own in-house lab, Prime began sending their pathology reads to ECPC, immediately improving confidence and turnaround time.

“Even before our lab was up and running, we had ECPC handle our reads because of the quality difference,” Dr. Corredine explains. “It was a big improvement right away.”

Every successful business transaction requires two parties willing to collaborate. As Dr. O’Neill notes,

“The management and the doctors of Prime were perfectly suited for this type of project. They are an excellent group – talented clinicians, energetic, and forward-thinking.”

ECPC provided full laboratory support, from initial financial planning to connecting the group with partners who could design and build their own pathology lab.

“It was simple and straightforward,” says Dr. Jamil. “A lot of the work was done in the background. ECPC just took the lead, and we were updated along the way.”

It was our first rodeo, but definitely not theirs. They had so much experience setting up labs like this.

Client Results

Once the lab was operational, the difference in quality was immediate and visible. The team at Prime now receives clear, detailed reports with color enhanced images, a level of quality that enhances confidence and clinical accuracy.

“The reports are excellent, quick turnaround, great clarity, and very accurate reads,” Dr. Jamil notes. “Even our primary care doctors appreciate seeing these reports with photographs.”

“The pictures were something we never had before,” adds Dr. Corredine. “It shows the detail of what they’re looking at, and that transparency builds trust.”

The improvements extend beyond report content. Communication between clinicians and pathologists has strengthened, and collaboration across specialties has flourished.

“Their accessibility has been incredible,” says Dr. Corredine. “If I have a question, we all have each other’s cell numbers. That’s really cool and rare.”

For Prime Healthcare, ECPC’s involvement did more than improve lab logistics. It rebuilt trust in their pathology workflow and elevated the standard of patient care.

“We trust the reports now,” says Dr. Corredine. “That alone improves patient care. We know what we’re dealing with, and if there’s ever a question, we can address it quickly.”

When asked how he would describe ECPC to another practice: “ECPC is a very professional, well run organization that provides high quality pathology readings with accurate and quick reports.” — Dr. Jamil

“It’s been fantastic. I couldn’t recommend them more highly.” — Dr. Corredine Prime Healthcare’s experience is a clear example of how the right partnership can restore confidence, improve quality, and transform the way a practice delivers care. ”

The reports are excellent, quick turnaround, great clarity, and very accurate reads.
